Story

Alex Madaga: Help Offset Hospital Bills, Funeral Costs and build the right to emergency health-care

Alex Madaga, a casual labourer, was hit by a vehicle on the night of 5th October 2015 at about 9:00 p.m. He was hit at Thiongó Road along Waiyaki Way, somewhere between Kangemi and Kabete police station, and about 400 metres from his home. Bystanders at the scene used his phone to call the wife (Ms. Jesca Moraa) who arrived at around 9.10 pm and they took him to Kikuyu Mission Hospital. From the time he left Kikuyu Hospital in search of specialised treatment, Alex would spend an agonising 18 hours in the Ambulance as the family and ambulance crew moved from one hospital to another in search of admission but without success. In all hospitals they visited (Nairobi Women’s Hospital - Adams Arcade, Kenyatta National Hospital - twice, Ladnan Hospital, Coptic Hospital, either there was allegedly no ICU capacity or the hospital could not admit without first receiving payment.

18 hours after the accident and 5 hours after returning for the second time to Kenyatta National Hospital in a final desperate move, Alex was finally admitted at KNH ICU at 5.40 PM on 6th October. Alex Madaga succumbed to his injuries at 1.50 PM on Friday 9th October aged 37. He leaves behind a 15 year old boy in form 1. The couple lost another child 5 months ago.

Alex’s death is sadly one of many Kenyans have experienced. It is therefore a public interest case. Our Bill of Rights (Article 43.2) and the Health Bill currently at second reading in the National Assembly enshrines the right to emergency care for all patients with life-threatening conditions. The failure to provide emergency care for Alex Madaga was a violation of this. Stand with the family and health rights NGOs to make these constitutional and legal provisions work for all Kenyans especially those who cannot afford private care.
