My name is Kevin Kibos. As I child I always loved playing outdoors with rocks and sand. I was a big fun of molding soil (Clay) into different shapes ha-ha pretending it was plasticine, this was a routine for me as I grew up. I got my first atlas when I was old enough to talk around 5 years old. Since then, I have always been obsessed with mountains and rivers, valleys, rocks, the beauty and magnificence of the earth and how it was formed. It was only natural that I would pursue Geology when I went to the university. And I am proud to have graduated in Sep 2015 with a 2nd class honours BSc in Geology at the University of Nairobi.

Kenya has begun her exploration and exploitation of oil in Turkana and is on the brink of producing her first barrel. This means the energy sector in Kenya will grow tremendously and this wonderful resource could easily move Kenya from a developing country to a developed one. Unfortunately, there are very few Geologists in Kenya and the work is contracted to foreigners.

I want to change this. We need for more Kenyan professionals, to be involved in developing and managing this particular resource. The more educated people are about this field, the more they understand about how important this resource is and what corruption and under utilization can do to it. I want to be one of these professionals.

That is why I applied to join the Master’s program to study Basin Analysis and Petroleum Geology in Perth, Australia. Petroleum Geology deals with understanding of rocks, structures and other features associated with petroleum systems. By taking this course, I can shine light on this billion-dollar industry that has not been given the attention it deserves.

We Kenyans will be able to understand and discover safe ways of mining Petroleum without destroying the environment around it. We will be able to carry out bigger energy projects that we could not due to inadequate energy resources, such as, locally processing the titanium ores which are currently being exported for processing.

And this is why I come to you, my good people of the internet. What it costs to attend the college is 56,700 AuD approximately, Ksh 4.6 Million, this amount will be used to cover my tuition fee and accommodation as well as upkeep. However, the institution requires a down payment of 18,600 AUD equivalent to Ksh 1.5 M.

I need to raise Ksh 2M to book a flight, apply for a visa and put down the deposit the school requires by 23 Dec 2016 or I will miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

So far, myself and 53 awesome Kenyans have raised over Ksh 532,090. We have around Ksh 1.4m left to go. Get out your mpesa, airtel money, eazzy money and let’s get sending. It takes as little as Ksh 50/-  to empower one of Kenya's sons
