Clean Up Kenya was established in July 2015 to advocate for and promote sustainable public sanitation. When the project began, the focus was on the issues of solid waste management particularly on areas of weak behavioural interventions which are often manifested in littering and illegal dumping.

The scope of our work has gradually expanded to include issues such as gaps in public sanitation regulatory frameworks, inadequate investment in waste management infrastructure for both solid and liquid waste, improper management of commissioned dumpsites, the role of the private sector in solutions building, issues of extended producer responsibility and sanitation rights particularly for the urban poor, among others.

In the last five years, we have conducted an online advocacy campaign that has reached over ten million persons on the above issues and inspired many positive actions across the country.

We have also been able to run two flagship projects in seven Kenyan counties where thousands of citizens and hundreds of organizations have been reached. Among these is an environmental mentorship project targeting children under the age of thirteen which has directly impacted over 6000 children with a multiplier effect on 15,000 more.

Our long term plan is to provide sanitation services and sustainability consultancy to the government, the private sector, and the public and to expand our work across Africa. In 2018 we helped set up Litter Free Ghana and in 2019 Clean Up Uganda.

2019 also saw us launch #CleanUpKenyaCoalition, the premier national coalition against pollution in Kenya. Just one week after launch, over 1500 members including students, government agencies, businesses, community-based organizations, and private citizens, among others had joined.

The project is led by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Betterman Simidi, with the help of a Country Director, Martin Muriithi, and is supported by an Advisory Board. Since 2016, we have benefitted from technical advice from different technocrats including, Dr. Yolanda Coombes, a former Sanitation Specialist at the World Bank. The organization currently has a team of six personnel who work on a voluntary and part-time basis, drawing no salaries or allowances.

We rely on the goodwill of Kenyans and friends of Kenya to operate. We will be happy if you would make a donation today. All donations go directly to support our initiatives.
