Story

Chaff Energy is a member of Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC), which is an initiative supported by the World Bank's infoDev incubation programme under clean energy technologies.

We are excited to share our work with you and hope that you can support our initiative to avail our product to market through crowd power.

All funds raised here will be matched at 50% by DFID, the UK's Department for International Development, through Energy 4 Impact's Crowd Power Programme.

Why Donate? How do i benefit?

1. Send a deposit of Ksh. 3,000.00 and balance of Ksh. 4,000.00 on delivery and save Ksh. 900.00 and get 15% on the 2nd stove
2. Send Ksh. 6,000.00 as full payment and save Ksh. 1,900.00 and get 20% on the 2nd stove
3. Get discount from 5% - 20% off your first gasifier cookstove order by donating between KES 50/- and 800/-. Your phone number will be your discount coupon.
4. Contribute in reducing energy poverty for most rural homes through availability of clean cookstoves and high quality fuel.
5. Play a role in reducing indoor air pollution that affect mostly women and children in rural areas.

Energy Poverty

Every year, indoor air pollution from cooking kills over 4 million people and sickens millions more. Investment in market-based solutions is needed to increase the adoption of clean cookstoves and fuels that can save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment.

Lack of access to improved (efficient and clean) cookstoves and supply of solid fuel sources is considered as energy poverty.

In Kenya over 70% (90% in rural areas) of households use agricultural residues and fuel wood (Firewood) to cook and warm their houses which accounts for 34.3 million tonnes annually. This is unsustainable and contributes to deforestation and making kitchen smoky and unhealthy.

Through shared research and solutions available in other parts of the world, we can make our lives better through supporting innovation. Our (TLUD) clean cookstoves  uses rice husks and pellets processed from any biomass with calorific value to produce  high grade heat (similar to LPG gas). This high grade energy is made available to households and businesses at a cost less than zero to reduce their energy cost and save time. Using this cookstove makes production of biochar highly decentralized and no dedicated and wasteful biochar kilns for use in organic farming.

Rice husks are easily gasified in Top-Lit Up Draft (TLUD) gasifiers. The combustion of this rice husk gas produces a blue flame. On the other hand, rice husk biochar makes good soil amendment.

We, Chaff Energy, are seeking to raise KSh. 3 Million to fabricate high quality clean cookstoves, buy pellet processing machines , and train farmers on how to use biochar (cook stoves 'waste’) as a source of income or as soil conditioner to increase crop production in organic farming.

Allocation:
Fabricate gasifier units (pellets) Total KES 1,458,440
Training 30 women in Mwea KES 40,000
Training jua-kali artisans to make table tops for gasifiers KES 60,000

Chaff Energy will train over 200 women (20 groups of 10 each) between the ages of 24 and 45 in Mwea, Bunyala and Ahero with the help of partner organizations such as Organic Agriculture Centre of Kenya (OACK) and faith-based women groups.

How does it work

Through pyrolysis, you are able to cook with the combustible gases as you make high quality charcoal granules or biochar. The charcoal granules can be used to cook or sold, while biochar can be used in kitchen gardening in place of manure and the surplus sold to make extra income. This practice is beneficial to our forests and environment.

It's estimated that a small household is capable of producing 1kg of charcoal granules/biochar per day at an average retail price of between KSh. 55 - 120 while biochar ranges between KSh. 20 - 65. When this biochar is activated for use in the farm, the price goes higher to approximately KSh. 250 - 700 per kg.

Decomposing waste using gasification greatly reduces methane which is over 20 times more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. This means that a rural-based woman can increase her income by KSh. 1,600 - 3,600 every month just by cooking for her family in a clean, warm environment over and above saving fuel cost estimated at KSh. 650 per month on average. that is to say, every time our gasifier is used, money is made within household, thus reducing cost of cooking to negative.  Furthermore, by using agricultural residues as renewable source of fuel, we significantly  reduce stress on our forest ecosystem.
