Story

The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) is an independent human rights organisation based in Nairobi, whose mission is to promote and protect the equality and inclusion of LGBTIQ individuals and communities in Kenya and advance their meaningful participation in society.

While in many parts of the world, gay marriage rights are being advanced, the LGBTIQ community in Kenya is still fighting for the right to safely exist. Like most other African countries, it is illegal to have gay sex in Kenya, with prison sentences ranging from 5 to 14 years for anyone convicted. Socially, being gay in Kenya also remains taboo. Influenced by Christian missionaries, local religious leaders and politicians alike, being gay is often viewed as either a sin or ‘un-African.’

NGLHRC exists to achieve legal and policy reforms towards equality and full inclusion of sexual and gender minorities in Kenya. The primary focus of their work is providing free legal aid/access to justice for sexual and gender minorities in Kenya which translates into strategic litigation and targeted advocacy. They also train paralegals and conduct civic education targeted on LGBTIQ rights.

NGLHRC is also working to change public policy within Kenya through strategic advocacy and a public and visible engagement with society. NGLHRC organises university debates, works with local partners and agencies, engages in civic protests and hosts, and participates in, cultural events geared towards the LGBIQ community.

Because Kenya is a regional powerhouse and leader within Africa, NGLHRC believes strongly that its work will not only change attitudes and improve the human rights of the LGBTIQ community in Kenya, but throughout the region. Impacting neighbouring countries like Uganda.

Since our foundation in 2012, we have provided legal aid in almost 2000 cases while civically empowering Kenya’s LGBTIQ and working on incremental litigation towards the decriminalization of homosexuality. Our many successes, even in the face of challenges, are owed to generous donors and funders who believe in our vision for a Kenyan society with equal rights and opportunities for all.

With your help the work and the fight for the freedom to love will continue. To learn more about NGLHRC, please visit our website at nglhrc.com
