We appeal for your generous support to raise funds for Zahari Reign a 16 months old baby boy currently in ICU gargow Fortis hospital India  due to birth asphyxia.

Zahari's medical story started on the 21st of May 2020 when he developed a very fever and convulsions leading him to be in a coma for 19 days. He was diagnosed with celebral palsy due to prolonged lack of oxygen in his brain causing 80% of his brain cells to die.

In brief:

On 21 may 2020, zahari started to have a fever and several convulsions which wouldn't go away. The next 24 hours turned their life upside down as he was diagnosed with a cerebral palsy from the brain due birth asphyxia.

What are the causes of birth asphyxia?

Birth asphyxia is a condition in which a baby does not receive enough oxygen before, during, or directly after birth.

Other names for birth asphyxia include perinatal asphyxia and neonatal asphyxia.

Birth asphyxia occurs when an infant does not receive enough oxygen when born, potentially leading to difficulty breathing. It can happen just before, during, or after birth.

Insufficient oxygen supply to the body can cause low levels of oxygen or a buildup of excess acid in the stomach

In mild or moderate cases, babies may recover fully. However, in severe cases, birth asphyxia can cause permanent damage to the brain and organs or be fatal . Zahari was officially diagnosed cerebral palsy and for 19 days he remained in a coma with breathing support. Birth asphyxia (cerebral palsy) has caused extensive damage to large areas of zahari's brain and as a result he now is less alert, has severe visual impairment, he is feeding through a gastric nasal tube, has acquired cerebral palsy, global developmental delay and gross motor disability.

Due to zahari's conditions , the team of Doctors at the Hospital Gurgaon Fortis in New Delhi India are in still trying to manage his condition . Zahari has had the best of the best doctors caring for him and helping him build a rehab program that will hopefully lead to his gross motor skills and eye sight improving, enabling zahari to be able to support himself and communicate again. The team of Doctors involved in his diagnosis and care included Neurologists, a Genetics team, a Metabolics team, Immunologists, physiotherapist .

Zahari is a fighter and in the past 3 months has made positive steps in the right direction. At times, he can hold his head up unsupported and is showing some purposeful movement which are the building blocks for his recovery. He has a long road ahead of him and the next six months present a crucial window to zahari recovery with intensive rehab designed to help build new brain pathways and muscle memory to increase his functionality.

Rehab involves coordination by Neurologists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Paediatricians, Opthamologists, Dieticians, Physiotherapists, hydro therapy . Zahari is transitioning to the private hospital system . The cost of this therapy is around Ksh 2,000,000 per year.

All parents want the very best for their children, and this is never more true than the wish zahari's parents have for him. This is where we need your donations to help fund the cost of his rehabilitation and alleviate the financial pressure off an already stretched family. The 24/7 care needed for a high dependent child is mind blowing.
