TESTIMONY OF THE CHAIRLADY OF JITOLEE WOMEN GROUP from MKENGE-C VILLAGE, MSABAHA – KILIFI COUNTY, COAST PROVINCE OF KENYA

(My name is Phiner Kadenge a widow with a 17-year-old daughter in form 2 at Menyhart Secondary school. I am the chairlady of Jitolee women group; a woman support group comprised of vulnerable women. We meet once every month to encourage each other to continue pressing on and not give up despite the challenges we are facing.)

(Our group has members with various challenges. I am living with HIV and a widow and face challenges of getting school fees for my daughter and a well-balanced diet since am on anti-retrovirals; there are two women with a blind husband, there is another widow, there are three single mothers as a result of teenage pregnancy and the rest are married women with alcoholic husbands who don’t support the families)

(We wish to get donors to register our group and also start economic generating activities to help meet our daily family needs)

(None of the members owns land we live on family owned land. After my husband’s death I returned to my father’s land to build a house. My father is dead and my mother is old. We would like to be involved in economic activities that don’t require a lot of land since we have access to little portions of land)

(If we can get donors to help us start a local poultry and Rabbit rearing project to help meet school fees needs and also get balanced diet)

Tunaomba Mungu asikie kilio chetu atuletee wahisani.

(We are praying that God will hear our cry for help and send well-wishers our way)

My name is Jerry Jabari Fahari, I am 13 years old and a Class 8 student. I am currently undertaking an International Leadership and Mentorship program under the Lincoln Ambassadors which prepares us to not only just be great students of today, but be great leaders of tomorrow.

In this program we are mentored and are required to do a project which revolves around any of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in order to solve problems in our society.

I choose SDG 5 which is on Gender Equality. The theme of this SDG is to Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Under this SDG my goal is to

ü Ensure women rights to economic resources is enhanced

ü Promote women empowerment

For my project I chose this group composed of Vulnerable women in Mkenge C village of Dabaso ward

The women face the burden of fending for their families, 2 of the women are widows with one of these widows being HIV positive, 2 of these women have a blind husband and the rest are either single mums or have husbands who care less about the family’s needs

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

üSolution is to help Phiner Kadenge with simple irrigation kit to establish a vegetable garden to be able to afford a balanced diet all year round since she is immune-compromised

ü To help Jitolee women group have an income generating activity to help pay fees for their kids; they are interested in rabbit and poultry rearing

My goal is to help raise funds in order to start an economic generating activity for this women group so that they can have a regular source of income to educate and feed their children

Kindly contribute to this worthy course
