MY STORY

Adolescent soccer and empowerment is a program implemented through a community partnership with an objective of transforming the lives of young boys and girls at Jimba in Rabai subcounty. The program targets adolescent boys and girls of ages below 16 years. Through strategy of sporting (soccer), the adolescent are carried through a process of life transformation with empowerment on sexual reproductive health, mentorship, life skills and support on educational improvement.

THE TEAM

The program was started by a team of adult villagers who identified a need to support young people and help them achieve their goals as they transit to adulthood. The team has at hand and long time experience in dealing with community issues. More important with the team is that they have the heart of young people in them.

HOW WE DO IT

A friend of mine and a school mate, Moses Baya, who is an international award winner photographer and staff of a news agency invited me for a talk to the boys and girls of Jimba minds youth where he chairs the group. My day of talk to the teens was a learning experience to me and about the good organization of the groung and needs of young people enrolled in the program. I promised to voluntary deliver weekly empowerment talks on sexual reproductive health, self awareness, goal setting and growth mindset.

Jimba minds youth reaches children with focus on talent (soccer), sexual reproductive health, mentorship, life skills and supporting school performance of the adolescent enrolled in the program. In this time of school closure due to covid 19 young girls are at high risk of teen pregnancies. The boys may also be influenced to drug use and other harmful behaviors.

ACTIVITIES

1.SPORTING (GIRLS AND BOYS SOCCER)

Research has shown that active participation of teenagers in sports improves their health, builds confidence, reduces psychological stress and connects teenagers to valuable contacts. Sports as a talent it also generates income to partipants.

The management team of Jimba minds and under leadership of volunteer coaches are carrying the boys and girls through a soccer training. The team play friendly matches and are registered in under 16 tournament with the Rabai subcounty.

Challenges facing the sporting activity at Jimba minds is lack of training facilities. There aren't enough balls for the boys and girls to use and they also lack uniforms including shoes for their use in the play ground.

2. SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, SELF AWARENESS, GROWTH MINDSET AND GOAL SETTING TO ADOLESCENTS

Peer pressure and difficult situations in family set ups renders the boys and girls at Jimba minds live at risk to negative influences. Situations are more threatening due to covid 19 and when teenagers have spent more time at home.

To help the young boys and girls have mechanisms to escape threatening influences, here at Jimba minds we empower the teenagers on sexual reproductive health, self, awareness, growth mindset and goal setting. The imparting of skills done through group discussions, field training and one on one dialogue enriches the boys and girls with valuable knowledge to help them successfully follow their life goals.

3. SUPPORT ADOLESCENT GIRLS WITH HYGIENE AND MENSTRUAL HEALTH

Adolescent girls are likely to get challenges to reach their potentials and when their menstrual periods are not contained. Adolescent girls may lack confidence to pursue certain things in public in fear of being branded. Or due to challenging economies family may be not be able to provide sanitary pads and in times of need.  It is the aim of the program to encourage adolescent girls gain confidence by providing the right information about menstrual and have them supported with renewable sanitary pads.

4. MENTORSHIP

For successful lives young people need people to walk with in their lives. When young people and inspired by adults, they grow interest of performing well in their lives.

At Jimba minds we walk in the lives of our teenagers. Working with a team of volunteer mentors children are guided the best way to go.

5. CAPACITY BUILDING OF CARE GIVERS/GUARDIANS OF THE ADOLESCENT GIRLS AND BOYS

Involvement of adults in the process of the implementation of the program is critical. Care givers and guardians play a big role in care, development and growth of children both physically and mentally. In the program we are empowering care givers and guardians of boys and girls enrolled. We are creating awareness to the care givers and guardians on rights of children, parental roles and responsibilities and their full involvement in program activities. Through the program we intend to organize training sessions and invite trainers/speakers on various topics of concern.

6. SPECIAL EVENTS AND AWARDS

In this program we intent to organize special events such as family days. Through which our children, parents and community members will gather for plays, fun and talks from various invited guests. During the special events days, the program will recognize best performing boys and in the presence of fellow youth, parents, leaders and community. This will work as a motivation tool to encourage winners do much better and the rest to work hard too.
