Hi, I am Jabari Kariuki. I am four years old and I need your help.

I was too eager to come into the world. So, when my mama was 6 months along, I decided to give my parents a surprise and showed up a little too early. I was admitted in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Kenyatta National Hospital here in Nairobi, Kenya. I weighed only 1 kg. My lungs needed to get stronger to help me breathe, because of that I was under oxygen therapy for 1½ months. While in the NICU I also suffered from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. Doctors had to keep resuscitating me. They did an amazing job of taking care of me until I could leave the hospital after 2 months.

When I was 1 year old, the doctors thought I was big enough for them to do something about my breathing. I underwent adenoid removal. This is a surgery that takes out the adenoid glands to help with my breathing. During my follow up visits to the doctors, everything seemed okay. My parents, however, noticed that my speech was delayed. And I wasn’t walking yet.

”Let him take his time,” everyone kept reassuring mum and dad. “He was born early, remember?” they would say. But on a visit to the doctor one day, I was given a Vitamin D injection. I walked within hours! I have been running around ever since.

I still hadn’t started talking. So when I was 2 years old, I was taken to see another doctor. He took me through a sleep test only for him to find that my ears had not been doing so great this whole time.  You see, I cannot hear well. I hear loud sounds. Really loud sounds. Like the sound an airplane makes. You see, because I can’t hear, it is also difficult for me to develop my speech and language skills.

But I really like solving puzzles. I also enjoy colouring and watching animations. I love going for playgroup and playing with the other children. Sometimes we do not understand each other so well.

You know what else I would really like? To be able to hear well!

Doctors tell my mum and dad that it is possible for me to hear. This is wonderful news. However, I would need a Cochlear implant. A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that electrically stimulates the cochlear nerve (nerve for hearing). The implant has external and internal parts. The external part sits behind the ear. It picks up sounds with a microphone. It then processes the sound and transmits it to the internal part of the implant.

My mum and dad have been the best throughout all this. They have found some doctors in India who can do the surgery for me. Going to India and the care for me afterwards is a costly affair – a total of KES 6.7M (about US $67,000). I can’t count that high, but from the looks on people’s faces when they hear it, it must be A LOT.

This amount would pay for the travel to India with my mum and dad, for the surgery on both ears and for our food & accommodation while there. Also, it will help in paying for some follow up visits and specialists who will ensure that the implants are working well.

This treatment will mean so much to my parents and me. They will stop worrying about me so much. I don’t like seeing them like that. I’ll also be able to join in many more games with my playgroup friends; enjoy the different sounds around like the one made by my toy car, or the one by the birds I see on trees. I’ll also be able to hear the cartoons I watch. And I can’t wait to start school once I am back and feeling better!

Thank you so much for reading my story. I’ll appreciate any support you give me.

You can also help by getting the word out, please share the link with your family and friends.
