When public health crises like Ebola strike, researchers are at the front lines, studying how the disease might spread, and how it can be stopped.  Peris Ambala, a PhD student at Kenyatta University in Kenya, is one of those researchers.  With support from the Mawazo Institute’s PhD Scholars Programme, Peris is using tools from molecular genetics to examine whether the virus, which was responsible for a major outbreak in West Africa that killed thousands a few years ago and another that is currently ongoing in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was also a threat in Kenya.  Her research found no evidence of this type of virus circulating in Kenya at the moment, though on-going monitoring is required to stay ahead of this devasting disease.

Peris is just one of the many inspiring East African women whose scientific contributions are being supported and amplified by the Mawazo Institute.  From 2018 – 2019, we provided over $40,000 in research grants and supported the professional development of ten young female scientists through our PhD Scholars Programme.  Our Public Engagement programme also highlighted the accomplishments of dozens of African women to hundreds of audience members in Nairobi, and thousands more online who stream and view our content from all across the globe.  In 2020, we will welcome the second cohort of PhD Scholars, and will digitize our professional development curriculum, making it available to scientists throughout Africa.

Will you support the next generation of women driving research for development in Africa with a donation to the Mawazo Institute?  Your donation will help us provide a range of resources to the promising young women we support, including:

·       Travel costs to collect data in rural areas (KES 2,500)

·       Basic scientific equipment like sterile gloves and pipettes (KES 5,000)

·       Statistical software for data analysis (KES 10,000)

·       Three-day training workshop on research methods (KES 20,000)

In East Africa, female scientists have enormous potential to lead their countries to a better future by infusing new talent, energy, and ideas into research, academia, and policy making.  We are grateful for supporters like you who are helping to engineer new African futures.
