Kajiado primary school children enjoy clean rain water, new latrine facilities and hand washing stations

Many parts of Kenya face perennial water scarcity. As a country, we heavily depend on rainfall. When there is prolonged drought, there is severe water shortage. People and especially children are confronted with numerous challenges among them lack of clean drinking water and poor sanitation.

For many years, school going children in Kajiado County have faced water challenges. Many parents do not take their children to school so they can stay at home as the adults look for water. This has a long term effect on literacy levels in the country as a whole.

In 2016, thirty nine (39) members of the Rotary Club of Nairobi East set out to conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, to raise funds for construction of rain water harvesting facilities in Elkerian, Oloropil and Eiti primary schools in Kajiado County. It was during this time that the club appreciated that more schools were facing severe water challenges. The club made a decision to scale the project from 3 to 25 schools to impact a larger population.

Ever since the club has been aggressively fundraising every year. So far 11 schools have benefitted from these efforts and have fully fitted water tanks with regular supply of water.

We have schools on the waiting list that NEED YOUR HELP - Entukai, Kepiro, Eiti, Esilanke, Emuruadikir, Marantawa, Iltuleta, Parsinti, Oloilalei, Lenkisem and Loolakir primary schools have been shortlisted as project beneficiaries.

From July 2017, works commenced with Entukai Primary as the pilot school.  The works have been undertaken by three different contractors to ensure that the project was completed within the shortest time possible. To date, water tanks have been constructed in all targeted schools in phase I.

Your financial support will enable us scale up the schools sanitation and hygiene project in Kajiado County that has so far impacted 2,500 pastoralist families. The project involves installing water tanks, pit latrines and hand washing systems in primary schools with low school attendance. The project intends to keep children who would otherwise miss classes in search of water, in school.

It has been exciting times seeing the children enjoy clean rain water and sanitation facilities. To this end, this is what Rotary is all about - Service!
