Poor status of latrines in public primary schools often make it impossible for girls to remain in school during their menses.

They are see-through latrines since they are constructed with decaying timber frames. The floors are either soil-plastered or timber held that overtime loosen. The doors have no locks or are broken if they still exist and the roofs are leaking due to old and rusty corrugated iron sheets.

For teenagers in primary schools monthly periods come with some form of shame and they want to keep it private. An insecure latrine without locks, drainable floor and hand washing equipment compromises the dignity and comfort of girls while in that special season of their puberty.

Since 2015 under the Pads Give Away initiative Ogiek Peoples’ Development (OPDP) has been distributing pads and underpants to underprivileged school going girls enrolled in schools in Eastern Mau. So far more than 2,000 pupils and students have benefitted from the initiative.

In the evaluation of the success of the initiative by OPDP the benefiting girls have reported lack of proper and supporting sanitary facilities as a major challenge to their menstrual hygiene and sanitation. Although, we provided pads thereby solving problem of inaccessibility to the sanitary products, we did not tackle hurdle of their physical facilities necessary to observing proper menstrual hygiene and sanitation. That is appropriate latrines.

OPDP wants to deliver these kind of latrines to the girls.

With Give Girls Sanitation Dignity campaign, OPDP seeks to raise KES 1.2 million to:

  •          Built three concrete latrines
  •         Install them with hand washing facilities
  •         Establish a water harvesting system
  •         Buy two-10,000 liter septic tanks
  •         Educate pupils both girls and boys and the teachers on water, hygiene and sanitation management.

Please donate and share the fundraising campaign.
