A Worthy Cause.

Ngurubani Secondary School (NSS), a mixed secondary school, was founded in 2013 in Mwea sub county of Kirinyaga County, Kenya, East Africa.

The founding was the culmination of a growing need for more secondary schools in the area and indeed the county, as the population increases. More and more young people increasingly found themselves without opportunities to pursue higher education due to poverty and lack of adequate spaces in the already overstretched existing schools. This coupled with the collapse of a community polytechnic (Mucii-wa-Urata) that offered hands-on skills like carpentry, masonry and dressmaking to young people from the area, and the elevation of the Kirinyaga Technical Training Institute to University status, thus making it difficult for a larger number to miss places at the now prestigious institution.

For the last couple of years as the first class advanced towards NSS’s first national examinations (KCSE) in 2016, more classrooms were built from the CDF funds and other well wishers. The student population quickly grew to 262 by 2016 in a single stream, with about twelve teachers and four members of the non teaching staff, a testament that the idea for the school was wildly successful.

Notwithstanding the challenges of a start-up institution, the students adapted to the new school environment and made their presence felt both in academic performance and co-curricular activities. The results of the first attempt in the national examinations of 2016 showed that the new NSS ranked position 6 out of about 20 existing schools in the sub county, which is proof that NSS is set to become a new center of excellence.

In 2017, due to high pressure from the community for more spaces, a second stream of forty students was admitted in form one, thereby opening a new growth trajectory for NSS.

However, the growth in the school’s physical infrastructure has not kept up with the growth in student population, precipitating a crisis that requires the immediate attention of the larger community and well wishers from around the world. NSS is in dire need of water and sanitation infrastructure, laboratories and laboratory equipment, more classrooms, a kitchen and a dining hall, a perimeter fence and a school gate as well as more staff to run the fast growing institution.

The Board of Management (BOM) of NSS, and the school’s administration, ably led by Principal Charles Karwigi have applied the most prudent management practices to maximize the benefits of the scarce resources available. Despite a huge challenge in collecting school fees from some of the poorest students in the community, the school has consistently operated without debt and often with a surplus.

The Board of Management has launched a fund raising campaign to address the infrastructure needs of the school. The aim is to raise Ksh 30,000,000 in the first year and to reach a target of Ksh 100 Million in five years. A funds drive in aid of the school has been organized to be held in the school grounds on Saturday, 13th May, 2017, by which time a target of Ksh 15,000,000 is expected to have been raised.

The Board of Management invites parents, friends and well wishers from around the world to support the current and future students of Ngurubani Secondary School (NSS) in cash and kind to help the young ladies and gentlemen realize their potential in development of knowledge, and skills, so as to responsibly manage the resources of their planetary habitat. Your donation will go a long way in this noble and worthy cause.
